Form EX-17 is used to apply for or renew your TIE card. TIE is your official identity card in Spain — without it, banking, renting an apartment, and school enrollment are not possible. It is completed after EX-01 is approved.

Empadronamiento is the official registration of your residential address at the town hall. It is required for NIE, TIE, school enrollment, public health insurance, and residency renewals.

Deadline: You must register within 30 days of arrival.

Volante Validity: 3 months — it must be current for any administrative procedure.

Book an appointment at the Comisaría de Policía Nacional
Book online at citapreviaime.interior.gob.es — select «Expedición de documentos de identidad y extranjería»

Complete Form 790/012 and pay € 10.74
Via sede.policia.gob.es — select the «Autorización de Regreso» option

Prepare your documents
Valid passport + old TIE (even expired) + payment receipt + 1 passport photo + proof of residency

Attend the Comisaría
The authorization is issued the same day or the next day. Keep it with your passport.

Use the authorization
Present the authorization + passport to the officer at the airport. Valid for 90 days — single-use only.

What if I don't have a TIE at all?
Instead of a TIE, bring the Ministry approval letter (Resolución favorable). This document proves that you have legal residency status.
Can I use this authorization multiple times?
No — the Regreso authorization is single-use. You must apply separately for each trip.
What if my trip is urgent?
Go in person to the Comisaría and explain the emergency situation. Sometimes they process it the same day without an appointment — but this is not guaranteed.
Does Regreso replace the TIE?
No — it is only valid for one round trip. Your TIE must still be renewed.
Should I pay online or at a bank?
Both are accepted. Paying online at sede.policia.gob.es is more convenient. If you go to a bank, make sure it has the bank stamp on the form.
